MEGA : Fairy Pitta in Hanoi!

First glimpse...

This morning (29th April) I met Hung at my habitual patch, when I arrived he told me he had just seen and photographed a Fairy Pitta!!! We decided to move in two opposite directions to increase our chances to relocate it. The patch is small (ca 3 ha) but the vegetation is dense. Nevertheless, we were confident to find it again.
After 45 minutes or so, I flushed it at about 200m from the place Hung saw it. It perched 10 meters away on a fallen branch, at eye-level. I moved verrrry slowly to get a better look and fired some (well, many…) shots. After 1 minute of observation the bird dropped down to the ground to continue its Pitta's job, never to be seen again (by me). Later, Hung relocated it, almost in the same area, and got better images than the ones taken in the early morning (low light conditions at this time).
Apparently, there are few records of Fairy Pitta in Vietnam. A once-in-a-lifetime bird for me, I think.

Vietnamese tourism popularised in India

A delegation from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and 15 leading tourism agents are showcasing their products at the Global Exhibition on Services GES-2015, which is taking place in India from April 23-25.

GES-2015 is jointly held by the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), serving as a platform to enhance strategic cooperation and develop synergy between the service sector in India and their global counterparts.

Themed “Vietnam- Land of Cultural Heritage”, numerous products are on display at the 100 square-metre pavilion which has drawn the attention of visitors seeking cooperation opportunities.

Earlier, the Vietnamese Embassy in India held a press conference to introduce Vietnamese tourism to journalists and tourism agents.

Vietnamese Ambassador to India Ton Sinh Thanh said that the Embassy will collaborate with the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism to promote the nation’s tourism as well as facilitate visa applications for Indian travellers to visit Vietnam.

He highlighted that after attending GES-2015, the Vietnamese delegation will carry out promotion programmes in the southern Indian cities of Hyderabad and Chennai from April 26 to 29 in a bid to tap tourism potential between the two countries.

Vietnam and India have elevated their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, paving the way to develop tourism exchanges.

In the past three years, the number of Indian tourists to Vietnam multiplied three-fold from 18,000 people in 2011 to 55,000 in 2014. However, the figure represents only 0.25 percent of the total Indian visits to Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

Sharp drop in international arrivals

The number of international visitors arriving in Vietnam during the first four months of this year dropped by 12.2 percent from the same period last year to 2.69 million.

Tourists ride bicycles in Hanoi

This was derived from data furnished by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.

Visitors arriving by air, made up for 83 percent of the total international arrivals, and fell by 9 percent over the same period last year, while arrivals by train and road dropped by a hefty 30 and 25 percent, respectively.

In April alone, Vietnam received more than 690 international visitors, rising by 11.7 percent from the previous month, but dropped by 7.4 percent over the same month last year.

The number of visitors from Asia to Vietnam during the four-month period fell by 12.9 percent from a year ago to 1.73 million, with a considerable decline in the number of visitors from China (down 33.2 percent), Cambodia (down 28.1 percent), Thailand (down 23.7 percent), Laos (down 35.5 percent) and Indonesia (down 21.6 percent).

The number of visitors from Europe also slipped 8.4 percent, especially from Russia, which dropped by 19.9 percent.

However, during this period, Vietnam saw a surge in the number of visitors from South Korea by 33.4 percent and Finland, which jumped 27 percent. Modest increases were also seen in several markets, including Spain, Singapore, Italy, the United States and Germany.

China and Korea were two markets, which had the highest number of visitors coming to Vietnam, with more than 187,000 and 85,200 during the first four months, respectively, data showed.

The number of international visitors coming to Vietnam had started falling at the beginning of this year after reaching a peak of 7.87 million in 2014, forcing the tourism sector to introduce measures to renovate and attract more tourists.

Experts said although the number of international visitors had dropped partly due to the impact of the global economic recession and the slump in several currencies, making trips more expensive, Vietnam needed to improve its tourism and hospitality services and renovate tourism products.

According to the Deputy Ch airman of the Vietnam Tourism Association (VAT), Vu The Binh, the tourism industry of Vietnam lacked innovation, which hardly compelled tourists to return.

Tourism promotional activities also remained weak, Nguyen Cong Hoan, the deputy director of Hanoi Red Tours, said. The expense budget allocated to tourism promotion in Vietnam was only VND30 to 40 billion (US$1.38-$1.85 million) a year, which was modest in comparison with the millions of dollars spent by Thailand or Malaysia.

In addition, there was a lack of co-ordination among promotional activities at the country and local levels and among localities.

Hoan said Vietnam needed to formulate a long-term promotional strategy for the tourism industry to attract more international tourists, together with preparations in infrastructure, such as hotels and restaurants, along with enhanced service quality.

Hai Van (Sea Cloud) Pass. (Source: vietnamtourism.gov.vn)

The pass is located along the Hai Van mountain side, between Thua Thien-Hue and Da Nang city in the Central Vietnam . Standing 500 meters above sea level, it is the highest and arguably the most beautiful pass in Vietnam . It has become well known to tourists from its appearance on the popular UK motoring show Top Gear in 2008.

According to the newspaper, travellers can hire motorbikes or cars to ride along the pass as part of a one-day loop. At the top of the pass, visitors stand in awe at the amazing and beautiful views.

The pass has a length of 23 kilometres and contains a series of hairpin turns, steep inclines and breath-taking vistas.

Topping The Guardian’s list is the Sa Calobra Highway in Mallorca, Spain, while roads in Japan, Norway, Brazil and Nambia were among others featured.

Hide-and-seek with some spring migrants

Some birds are easy to get close and easy to photograph. Some other are not particularly cooperative models. Some exemples below, photographed the last few days at Hanoi. I had to play hide-and-seek with them for some time in order to capture these images - not "clean" ones. But it's one of my favorite games :)

A wandering female White-bellied Green Pigeon
My second Treron in the city, the first one in autumn 2014. Most green pigeons are noted wanderers so there is always the possibility of encountering vagrants in unusual locations

Black-naped Oriole
One of the main target of the local hunters (with drongos), so a very good reason for them to be skittish
I don't understand how people can hunt such a beautiful creature

Unidentified imm. Sparrowhawk (very likely Japanese)

Oriental Cuckoo
Perches inside the canopy. Not often oberved in Hanoi, but certainly overlooked.
Other passage migrant Cuckoos there include Chestnut-winged C., Large Hawk C., Hodgson's Hawk C., Drongo C.. I also heard last week a singing Indian C.

Pix, call and song of passage migrant Arctic Warbler (s.s.)

Arctic Warbler, Kamchatka Leaf Warbler and Japanese Leaf Warbler (the splits of the Arctic Warbler complex) cannot be safely separated on physical features alone, even if the Japanese is on average more yellow than the others. That leaves us with calls and songs as the only safe method of identification.

At Hanoi, I have so far only recorded  the Arctic Warbler (sensu stricto). It is now the peak passage. They tend to be very vocal and are often heard before they are seen.

Recording of call + song (Hanoi, 27th April):

Other singing phylloscs seen recently included Dusky, Radde's and Yellow-browed.

Quang Binh’s exotic cave chosen for film Peter Pan

214935

film Peter PanThe central province of Quang Binh has much opportunity to cooperate with international film production companies, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Tran Tien Dung told a recent tourism promotion workshop in Hanoi.

Last year, a team from US-based Warner Bros, has surveyed a cave at Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh province to select scenes for the film Peter Pan.

UNESCO's World Heritage Site of Phong Nha-Ke Bang, is situated in a 2,000sq.km limestone zone, some 500km south of Ha Noi. It is well-known for its cave and grotto systems, comprising more than 300 caves with a total length of over 70km including Sơn Đoòng and Én (Swallow caves).

According to provincial leaders, this is a good opportunity for the province to attract visitors and elevate its image in the world.

Last year, the province received 2.8 million visitors, a doubled figure against 2013. Among them, foreign arrivals saw a strong growth rate of nearly 27%.

Two ancient Buddhist pagodas in the west of Hanoi – Tay Phuong and Thay – received certificates recognising them as special national relic sites on April 23.

The event coincided with the opening of the two pagodas’ festival, which gather crowds of local residents and tourists who come to worship and to enjoy a range of traditional activities and art performances.

The Tay Phuong Pagoda, located in the outlying district of Thach That, is renowned for its architecture and elaborate carvings typical of the 18th century, notably a collection of more than 70 Buddha wood statues in diverse sizes which have been recognised as national treasures.

Among the sculptures, each of which features a distinct posture and facial expression.

Legend has it that the Tay Phuong Pagoda was built along time ago and reconstructed in the 16th and 18th centuries.

The pagoda includes three separate two-storey buildings, with brick architecture featuring long roof arches. Each roof has eight apexes, carved of the four supernatural creatures: dragon, unicorn, tortoise and phoenix, among other subtle patterns.

The Thay Temple, located in Quoc Oai District, was built in the Ly Dynasty 11 th century on the foot of the Sai Son mountain.

It houses a national treasure, the trinity statues of the Amitabha Buddha, flanked by two Bodhisattvas representing wisdom and compassion in Pureland Buddhism. The statues are considered the sculptural pinnacle of the flourishing period of Buddhism in Vietnam.

The ancient temple also houses many other valuable artefacts, such as the lotus-shaped stone pedestals which researchers say date back to the Ly or Tran dynasties, 11 th -15 th centuries.

Besides traditional religious rituals, the Thay Temple festival features water puppet shows in a lake in front of the main hall to honour the founder of this art, Zen master Tu Dao Hanh (1072-1116).

Quang Binh to focus on cave tourism

214756

The central province of Quang Binh has a lot of development potential in the tourism sector yet, some say, it should hold back and concentrate on one or two attractions to build up its own tourism trademark.

At a workshop held in the capital city yesterday, it was generally agreed that the province's best feature was the cave system in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

"Phong Nha – Ke Bang" is considered a king among caves, not only in the province in the whole country," said Nguyen Quoc Hung, deputy director of the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism.

"Quang Binh should focus on two key products of ecological tourism (cave and sea) and then its cultural, historical and spiritual tourism," he added.

"Foreign tourists are already interested in Phong Nha-Ke Bang so if the province concentrates on the site, it could turn into an international tourism destination, like that of Ha Long Bay," he said.

"Besides distinctive tourism products, Quang Binh needs to build up more attractions for domestic and foreign tourists who seek adventure tourism," he said.

Tran Tien Dung, deputy chairman of Quang Binh People's Committee, said that the province was compiling a dossier to submit to UNESCO to recognise the Phong Nha-Ke Bang park as a World Nature Heritage site for its biological diversity value. The park was already recognized by UNESCO in 2003, earning a heritage status for its geological value.

The park's geological foundation was formed more than 400 million years ago, and hosts more than 300 small and giant caves and grottos. Internationally known caves like Son Doong, Tu Lan, Phong Nha, Thien Duong, Tien Son, En and Toi are all surrounded by primitive and diverse forests.

Dung said tourism at Phong Nha-Ke Bang attracts many tourists from overseas, especially its adventurous cave tours.

The province's authorities worked hard to diversify the way tourists experience the cave system to avoid repetitiveness and keep each site unique.

"For example, at Phong Nha and Thien Duong caves, visitors can combine trekking with kayaking," and, "At Tu Lan Cave, tourists can swim, trek and stay overnight inside the cave," Dung said.

Besides Phong Nha-Ke Bang, the province would do well to attract visitors from northeastern markets of Japan and South Korea by developing its seaside leisure tourism.

Quang Binh also boasts cultural, historical and spiritual sites for tourism such as recently developed Vung Chua – Dao Yen, the tomb of General Vo Nguyen Giap.

The province received more than 2.7 million people last year, an impressive 99.7 per cent increase over the previous year. This year, they hope for 3.3 million visitors. International tourists accounted for 60 per cent of last year's guests.

The province does have an Achilles heel, however. It has limited accommodations to offer.

"We shall promote home stay and farm stay models at local villages," said Dung for now.

The province has shopped around for investors interested in developing tourism services like building luxurious hotels, tourism agencies and transport services.

Local authorities have implemented some measures to help hotels and restaurants.

In Dong Hoi City, the capital city of the province, three, four and five star hotels received financial support to improve the running of their operations while large restaurants were given VND500,000 (US$23.5) per square metre and VND1 billion ($47,000) to train each unskilled server.

New grotto on Vietnam’s UNESCO-recognized karst plateau a promising tourist attraction

214747

With access to a newly discovered grotto within the UNESCO-recognized Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark being restricted to facilitate further study, the resplendent cave promises to become a touristy spot.

The newly discovered Lung Khuy Grotto in the UNESCO-recognized Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, located in the northern province of Ha Giang, promises to become a touristy spot.

Lung Khuy Grotto, whose discovery was announced early this month, nestles inside an imposing mountain in Quan Ba District, located in the northern province of Ha Giang.

The grotto is part of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, which spans four of the province’s districts, including Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Meo Vac.

Trieu Thi Tinh, vice director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters who expressed wishes to make a field trip to the Lung Khuy Grotto that the cave is currently barricaded, with no entry allowed.

“The provincial authorities have directed that access to the cave be obstructed for now so that exhaustive study can be conducted to come up with premium approaches to conserving the site and leveraging its tourism potential,” she added.

Tinh noted that local authorities have tasked police and militiamen with standing guard over the cave, which is one of the karst plateau’s most resplendent grottos, day and night.

After several phone calls, the Tuoi Tre reporters finally got a nod from the Quan Ba District authorities to enter the visually striking cave.

Upon reaching the entrance to the Lung Khuy Grotto at midday, they were surprised to see three policemen and some local militiamen braving the scorching heat and keeping a constant watch.

The cave entrance is surrounded by a stone wall which has two carefully locked doors.

Though two district culture officers accompanying the Tuoi Trereporters were given the keys to the doors, the leader of the guard team would not let them in for not having a valid sealed reference from the district leaders.

The guards did not give in until another two phone calls to local officials were made.

The reporters were warned to take great caution as the cave is deep, dark, extremely slippery, and is filled with nooks and crannies.

As observed by the reporters, the cave is relatively wide, with certain sections measuring 50 meters in width.

Hanging from its ceiling are countless stalactites of various sizes and shapes.

Many are two or three meters long and boast bizarre shapes.

The cave is also adorned with drooping curtain-like stalactites, rugged dark-yellow stone pillars, and transparent, white stalactites.

As part of the Dong Van geopark, the Lung Khuy Grotto as well as other caves and stone forests in Quan Ba District’s rocky area are also rich in geological value.

With its pristine charms and geological and geomorphologic diversity, the Lung Khuy Grotto promises to emerge as a fascinating tourist destination.

Though its discovery was not made public until early this month, many locals said they have been aware of the cave’s presence much earlier.

Van Thi Chu, a 60-year-old Mong woman who lives near the Lung Khuy Grotto, divulged that farmers usually fetch water from inside the cave to drink.

They also take shelter in the cave from the heat or rain.

Nguyen Tien Hong, head of Quan Ba District’s Office of Culture and Information, told Tuoi Tre that his district has recently included the Lung Khuy Grotto in a project which is meant to tap the tourism potential of scenic spots scattered in Quan Ba District from now to 2030.

“Quan Ba is endowed with quite many gorgeous caves, but a number of them have been intruded upon by human intervention due to locals’ limited awareness and lack of orientation and investment. We thus want thorough study this time to both properly conserve the Lung Khuy Grotto and bring out the best of its splendor for tourism purposes,” Hong noted.

The Dong Van Karst Plateau was recognized by the UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network in 2010 as one of 77 geological parks in the world and the second in Southeast Asia, after the Langkawi Geopark in Malaysia.

Located at an altitude of 1,000m-1,600m, the plateau is one of the country’s unique limestone areas, which contains significant imprints of the development of the earth's crust.

Up to 80 percent of the plateau’s karst formations are limestone formed by the elements through different natural development stages.

At least 13 fossil-geological formations have been found on the Dong Van plateau.

Among them, Chang Pung, the oldest, dates back 545 million years, according to the Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources.

Helicopters tour central region

DA NANG (VNS) — Tourists, and locals, now have helicopters as a means of transport from Da Nang to world heritage sites in the central region via Viet Nam TravelMart Agency's chartered tours, though the trip isn't cheap.

The price is a whapping VND70 million (US$3,250) for an hour trip from Nuoc Man Airbase to Hoi An and My Son Sanctuary. For a shorter 12-minute flight over the sea and mountains of Da Nang - Ngu Hanh Son Mountain, Ba Na Hills, Son Tra peninsula and My Khe beach – the price is VND3 million ($142) each passenger.

Last week, six Russian tourists were the first to hire the helicopter; they flew roundtrip from Laguna Resort in the town of Lang Co, Thua Thien-Hue to Hoi An and My Son.

The six-seat French-made EC132T2 helicopter will explore expanding air travel to the Cham Islands, Ly Son Island and En Cave in Quang Binh Province.

TravelMart, however, is not the first to offer helicopter tours. In 2011, the Viet Nam joint-stock tourism company, Vitours, operated chartered flights from Da Nang to the Cham Islands in a 24-seat Russian-made MI-17, but the tour shut down due to unknown reason. — VNS

Ba Danh Pagoda still exudes peace, tranquility after years of solitude

Remote respite: One of the carved stone dragons at the pagoda.

by Vuong Bach Lien

A cock crows from the garden in the remote Ba Danh pagoda near Ha Nam City, breaking the silence beside the romantic Day River. The breeze blows from nearby Ngoc Mountain, driving away the heat of early summer.

We were picnicking by the tranquil river wharf while looking at boats passing by. The gentle sound of dried leaves falling on the wharf steps reminds us of autumn. We forget all the worries of life outside.

When I was little, I heard an old saying: "Deserted like the Ba Danh Pagoda." It refers to places remote from civilisation that animals and birds love, but most people avoid. The saying made me curious to find out more about the mysterious pagoda. Finally, some days ago, I decided to drive 60km from Ha Noi to reach the site.

To my surprise, upon arrival, I met several groups of people who were there to pray or just to find peace and beauty – and relax. While the pagoda is peaceful, nowadays it is not deserted at all.

According to Nguyen Van Hai, the pagoda caretaker for 10 years, more than 1,000 people now visit the pagoda each month. Many return again and again.

Although it was almost forgotten for a long time, Ba Danh is now considered one of the most pleasant pagodas in the country because its river views and mountainous surroundings, clear views that are often swallowed up in other parts of Viet Nam as civilisation marches on.

Pots aplenty: The Ba Danh Pagoda attracts tourists with its peaceful landscapes, trees and large, radiant flowers. — VNS Photos Vuong Bach Lien

The design of the pagoda itself is low and heavy, like a tortoise at rest.

Actually, the sire features more than just a pagoda. It is more of a religious complex, covering 10ha and containing more than 40 separate structures.

The Ba Danh Pagoda, also known as Bao Son Pagoda, is situated in Danh Xa Village, Ngoc Son Commune, Kim Bang District, about 10km from Phu Ly town and 60km from Ha Noi. It is situated on the bank of the Day River in a large peaceful area far from any settlement.

No one knows exactly when the pagoda was built. But for generations, locals have repeated a legend about its construction.

Long ago in Danh Xa Village, heavy rain and strong winds damaged crops. One day, an old man had a dream that a beautiful girl with kind face, bright eyes and high forehead told him she was appointed to take care of local people. She showed him where they should build a pagoda. At that time, that land was covered with dense forest with ancient trees and lots of birds.

Pastoral pastime: A peaceful countryside road in Ha Nam Profince's Kim Bang District leads to the pagoda.

At first, it was just a small pagoda. Then, during the reign of Emperor Le Hy Tong (1676-80), it was upgraded. Local people were not allowed to build houses there, keeping the complex almost deserted.

After the pagoda was built, an ancient jack tree was felled. A stranger who had the same dream as the old man, took some of its wood to make a statue of a female deity harking back to the very beginning of Vietnamese culture — Bao Son Holy Mother.

In the flood season of that year, a wooden throne washed onto the bank of the river. Oddly enough, the statue fitted perfectly on the throne – and still sits there! Since that time, local farmers have had good weather and abundant crops.

The supernatural reputation of the Holy Mother attracts tourists from many areas. Boatmen passing the area always burn incense at the pagoda to pray for safety.

The main pagoda, which carries a statue of the Buddha, also has the ancient Vietnamese Tu Phap or four deities: Cloud Dharma, Rain Dharma, Thunder Dharma and Lightning Dharma.

In the past, the pagoda was deserted because of its difficult access of the site.

Hai said that in the old days, the site was in a forest where many wild animals lived. To reach it, visitors had to take an 8km boat ride along the river," he said.

In 1994, the Ba Danh Pagoda was declared a national historic monument by the Ministry of Culture. In 2007, the province spent VND20 million (US$1,000) on restoration.

A new bridge was built connecting the pagoda and Highway 21. A 2km-long concrete road was also built from Que town to the pagoda, passing through several handicraft villages.

Last September, the pagoda opened a large guest house to serve tourists. Despite the renovations and additions, the pagoda still preserves its serene ambience.

Le Van Doan, head of the cultural department in Kim Bang District, said there were plans to organise ecological and spiritual tours. After offering incense at the pagoda, visitors can continue on to see Ngoc Mountain and its lush green forests.

The Ba Danh Pagoda's festival is held on February 9 and 11 of the lunar calendar. Traditional rituals including peace payers and folk games, such as cock-fighting, boat racing and human chess are also held.

How to get there from Ha Noi:

By car: Go from Giap Bat bus station to Que town in Kim Bang District. The pagoda is 2.5km from the town.

By motorbike: There are two options. First - take Highway 1A. Go to Dong Van town, then turn right. From Dau Market, drive to Que town. Second - take Highway 1A to Phu Ly town, pass the Hong Phu Bridge. Take Highway 21 to Cam Son suspension bridge. The pagoda is 500m from the bridge.

Narcissus Flycatchers galore !

Hi all,

Below some shots of migrants taken recently at Hanoi. The highlight was a Narcissus Flycatcher, which is the third one recorded this spring in the city! And all of them seen in the same patch – amazing!

I also photographed the same day, amongst other, a female Yellow-rumped Flycatcher, a female Mugimaki Flycatcher and a Blue-throated Flycatcher - all of them lifer! Some days before, at Thanh Tri district, I encountered a  Crow-billed Drongo, which is also a great bird for the city.

We have definitely a great patch for migrant birds!

a careful examination revealed that this is a different male from the 2 others seen over the last few weeks

Sebastien : This  Blue-throated F.  showing a light orangey wash on breast and a white throat triangle puzzles me. I have found no indication of a similar taxon further north (e.g. in China). One thing is certain: it is a passage migrant in Hanoi, in both passage periods, but in small numbers (4-5 sightings for my part).
Some have identified it as a pale variant/morph of the  klossi race  - the latter considered as a southern Indochina endemic (and resident). This migrant must, in all likelihood, come from China so has a very distinct breeding range.

Green-backed Flycatcher - 21th April

This scarce passage migrant in Vietnam was previously known as a race of the Narcissus Flycatcher. It was subsequently split to a full species and named Green-backed Flycatcher (Ficedula elisae). It is also known as Chinese Flycatcher or Elise's Flycatcher in some other references. Some authors still prefer to retain this species as a sub-species of Narcissus Flycatcher ( Ficedula narcissina).
This female-type (a term used here to describe all females, and also immature males that have yet to develop any obviously- male features) was photographed on 21/4 at Hanoi.

Very helpful are the notes on identification of Narcissus Flycatchers

Whether immature male or female, confident identification of this individual as  elisae can be based on e.g. the olive-green upperparts ; the obvious yellow wash to the underparts (ruling out  narcissina) ; the obvious and evenly yellow eye-ring (typically rather more two-toned in narcissina); and on its structure - a combination of heavy bill and medium-length primary projection (with 7 primary tips visible from the rear on the left wing).

The yellowish rump suggest this might perhaps be a second calendar-year male.

One second before it flew off towards a prey...

Passage migrant Japanese Sparrowhawk

I finally got my first shot of a perched Japanese Sparrowhawk. I'm just extremely pleased that I at least got a shot of one finally haha. It was a very quick "oh my gosh there it is quick take-a-picture-as-fast-as-you-can before it flies away shot". Luckily I did manage to get the shot off right before it flew off. It is an adult female.

Sparrowhawks are very shy, they always see you before you see them and fly away. Very hard to get good looks at them. Almost impossible to approach. If you are lucky enough, one individual will land in a nearby tree AND will allow you a few seconds to take your photo. The chance of that ever happening in a forest is very very small. But in a 2 ha wooded patch, there are definitely grounds for hope!
Accipiter are not uncommon around the city in both passage periods but almost all my sightings remained unidentified.
