Luong Van Dam never got to meet his father, though people say he took a lot from the man, including his dark skin.
His ethnic Thai mother was pregnant when his father, then a soldier for French, had to leave his base in Dien Bien Phu on a mission.
He was born in 1953, one year before the famous battle ended with Vietnam’s victory.
“When he was here, I was still inside my mother’s belly,” Dam said of his father.
