Ha Long night market in north-eastern Quang Ninh Province. The city's People's Committee has removed the market after it was shown to be blocking the view to the bay. |
The removal was expected to finish before June 30, said Vice Chairman of the Committee, Pham Hong Ha.
The move is aimed at bringing back the view of the beautiful bay for domestic and international tourists.
The night market, which was open every Tuesday with several traders since 1999, was run by the Youth Tourism Co Ltd, he said.
So far, the market, with up to 250 traders doing business, is open seven days a week, he said.
Ha said that for a short while a temporary market had been set up for traders in a place where a local bus station once existed, about a kilometre away from its present location.
Hoang Ba Nam, Secretary of the province's HCM Communist Youth Union said that in the long term, the company would build an underground night market under the present location.
Le Nga, Deputy Head of the Market Management Board, appealed to the committee to extend the deadline for the removal of shops, because the traders received a message about the removal only on May 7.
The time for traders to prepare for the removal was too short, she explained.
In a related move, authorised agencies demolished, on Tuesday, the Youth Mart 1 Supermarket and the B Sea wave Club close to the Ha Long Bay as tourists were unable to view the beautiful landscape of the bay.
Both the constructions had been started by Youth Tourism Co Ltd in Bai Chay Ward.
