Vietnam’s Po Nagar festival attracts ten thousands of visitors

The Po Nagar Festival opened on April 20 in the beach city of Nha Trang, attracting tens of thousands of visitors and followers from nearby provinces.

The Cham temple tower, built sometime before 781 and located in the medieval principality of Kauthara, near modern Nha Trang, was dedicated to Yan Po Nagar, also known as Thien Y A Na, the goddess of the old country located in the modern central provinces of Vietnam.

The annual festival held from the 21-23rd of the lunar third month, which fall April 20-22 this year) is a big event to commemorate the goddess who is believed to have taught people to farm and to weave fabric, and have protected them from diseases and calamities.

The temple tower festival was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Vietnam's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2013.

This year's festival is expected to attract around 60.000 visitors and followers to the religious site to attend celebrations and religious rites which include traditional art performances and demonstrations of weaving fabric and making pottery products.
