Many travellers have cancelled tours to Danang City after news that the municipal People’s Committee will not hold the International Lighting and Visual Art Contest 2014 (DILVAC).

The municipal People’s Committee had approved the organisation of DILVAC in late April. The event was expected to attract the participation of four or five foreign teams and included a range of other activities, such as an art exchange, an artistic lighting exhibition, a gala dinner and tours. This year's contest would have been the first to be held and if successful, future contests will be held on even-numbered years while the Danang International Fireworks Competition will be held on odd-numbered years.
After the committee’s approval, B Cong Communications Ltd. Co. sought donors, invited teams for the participation and signed contracts with equipment companies as well as artists.
In mid-April after preparation for DILVAC 2014 was nearly complete, a telecom company made a VND20 billion (USD952,380) agreement to sponsor the contest.
According to Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, at a recent meeting held in Danang, most representatives from the Danang People’s Committee agreed on organising the event, but some others opposed the idea, and no agreement was reached.
Losses for tour agencies
On April 14, the committee announced that it would not organise the event for undisclosed reasons.
Nguyen Xuan Anh, Deputy Party of the Danang Party’s Committee, said that the cancellation of DILVAC 2014 was aimed to save sponsorship for the International Fireworks Competition 2015, which will mark the 40th anniversary of Danang Liberation Day.
This has had serious implications for B Cong Communications JS Company, which will have to spend hundreds of millions of VND in compensations for breaking the contracts. The firm has had to seek sympathy from their partners in lowering their compensations.
According to local travel agencies, the cancellation of DILVAC 2014 has led to a sharp decline in the number of tourists who book tours to Danang.
Dinh Van Loc, Director of Viet Da Travel Company, said a large number of visitors planned to Danang to see DILVAC 2014, but many of them have cancelled their tours to the city after news came out that the event would not be held.
