A well-known American dictionary, Merriam-Webster, has announced more than 150 new words and definitions for 2014, including the Vietnamese word “Pho”.
“Pho” refers to traditional Vietnamese soup made of beef or chicken. Its addition to the dictionary is a reflection of the popularity of the dish amongst Americans.
Many other new additions also refer to the huge influence of the digital revolution, the internet and social networking on daily life.
The dictionary is a publication of Merriam-Webster Inc, which is located in Massachusetts, US.
It was first introduced in 1828 with the original name “An American Dictionary of the English Language” which was edited by Noah Webster.
Today, the Merriam-Webster is one of the most common dictionaries in the US.
