Thai authorities have admitted that it was a mistake to require Vietnamese travellers to prove they had 20,000 baht
Following the public anger over the regulation, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand to work with authorities there to end the cash requirement.
The ministry’s Consular Department also sent a diplomatic correspondence to the Thai Embassy in Hanoi making the same request for continued favourable conditions for entry between the two countries.
Thai authorities admitted the regulation could be seen as insulting to Vietnamese tourists, particularly the notice at Aranyapathet border announcing that people from some countries, including Vietnam, to be questioned.
The Thai Ministry of Interior has issued a document for the removal of the regulation, allowing travelers to show their credit card, instead of cash.
Vietnamese officials and tourism companies have shown strong opposition to the Thai cash requirement for entering the country.
Dr. Pham Trung Luong, Deputy Head of the Institute of Tourism Development Research, said that Vietnam respects Thai visitors so it is unfair for Vietnamese travellers to suffer from discriminatory behaviour from Thai customs.
